Description:

Description for B&B:

Château Mouillepied, located in the picturesque village of Taillebourg, has a rich history dating back to the reign of King Louis IX of France, also known as Saint Louis. In an effort to reclaim his kingdom of Aquitaine from English rule, Saint Louis began the re-conquest of the region. One notable event was in 1638, when the Lord of Mouillepied had to pay homage to the Count of Taillebourg.

During the 18th century, Château Mouillepied underwent significant expansion under the guidance of Guillaume Clairins des Lauriers, the chief engineer of the Rochefort Arsenal and a Knight of Saint Michel. The château transformed into a stunning classical house, featuring terraced gardens, ponds, and beautiful stone walls.

The name "Mouillepied" was derived from the abundance of springs found on the property. Situated just two kilometers away from the historical village of Taillebourg, famous for the Battle of Taillebourg in 1242, the château is steeped in history and charm. This battle was immortalized by the renowned artist Delacroix in 1837.

Château Mouillepied now serves as a residence, offering guest house bed and breakfast accommodations and self-catering options. The owners warmly welcome guests to experience modern comfort in a countryside setting, amidst the enchanting surroundings of Romanic Saintonge. Conveniently located 30 kilometers from Cognac and the Atlantic beaches of Royan and Île d'Oléron, the château is an ideal base for exploring the region.

The spacious and comfortable bedrooms overlook the park and are equipped with modern amenities, including en-suite bathrooms or shower rooms. The ground floor of the château features public lounges where guests can relax by the fireplace. The orangerie offers a peaceful retreat, surrounded by the serene landscape of the Charente. Guests can indulge in a wide selection of teas, coffees, and soft drinks, which are complimentary and available in the evening. The owners also provide extensive information on local tourism activities, such as fishing, hiking, and visiting vineyards.

Located just 7 kilometers from Saintes, on the left bank of the Charente River, Château Mouillepied is easily accessible from major transportation routes, including the A10 motorway from Paris to Bordeaux and the A837 from La Rochelle airport. The château also offers two self-catering accommodations with central heating. Several restaurants can be found in close proximity to the property.
